Inside Paris' Illegal Squats

Faced with soaring real estate prices and an increasingly desperate housing crisis in Paris, a squatting collective has been formed to find spaces of residence in buildings that have remained unoccupied for years.
We followed them as they searched for a new place, occupied it, and used their knowledge of French law to negotiate with the owner and the city's local administration.

Imagine living in a country that provides FREE healthcare, schooling (through university; basically can get your bachelor for free), & in many cases free housing (or housing that's very subsidized), but living this squatter lifestyle just b/c you're too lazy & snobby to live in the outskirts of Paris or the suburbs meaning you'll have to take a 40min-1hr train ride into the city center. The main guy himself even noted in this clip that people have told him he can easily live in Paris but more on the outer regions, where rent is cheaper (or subsidized as I mentioned). But, he doesn't want to to b/c basically these guys want to live in the nicer, more equidistant areas (Paris is shaped/designed as a circle). So, they're squatters by choice, not necessity or b/c of being truly "homeless." These aren't squatters like in the U.S. or dealing w/ a homeless crisis like here in the states. They talk like they'd be sleeping on the streets, which isn't true at all. These folks are just privileged white kids who want to have the luxury of living in the center/more proper Paris. I've lived in Paris. The amount of resources this country has for its citizens is basically what every "progressive" in the U.S. is fighting for. They have sooooo many perks. These folks just need to go get a job and stop living their fantasy hippie life acting like they're "struggling."

Fully support this guys on their mission. They're finding and rescued uninhabited and unloved spaces and allowing awesome people to live in the city. They were born there. Paris is their home.

Hmm interesting conundrum not sure how needy these folks are but I do think it’s terrible that with an affordable housing crisis that’s really present in basically all cities around the globe we have buildings completely empty. If these buildings can be made habitable then they should especially if public owned they are serving no function shut up and forgotten and the local and federal governments should work together to address shortages in housing. I’m hardly an advocate for excessive community housing in many of it’s present forms but surely we have to balance the needs for people to have somewhere to live versus people’s Sometimes justifiable Bias against government housing there has to be a middle ground.

I once stayed with a friend who lived in a squat in Amsterdam. It was an old factory that had been empty for years. They fixed it up, refused to allow anyone on hard drugs to stay there and even had the support of the mayor. They also had an art collective and would hold free workshops for the local community. Not all squaters are bad people, some are just at difficult times in their lives. They didn't have a toilet though so that was pretty rough.

France has it bad and I heard like 50-% taxes, but you should see the far suburb areas like where they WOULDN'T kick out the non-whites. Yes he was being totally serious honest about that. At least that's what I have been told by several ex-francais -friends- ex-co-workers. Also why do i keep growing the impression that many french people always only such nice sincere characters when they are on the brink and in desperate need.. edit: You can blame crap like that website i can't think of name but youi rent like for a night for several hundred to tens of thousands monthly. 12 years ago units in my complex were 75-110k one just sold for 350. My nextdoor neighbour was expecting 215 and got offer of 315 the first day. It's criminal to allow these places to fall into disrepair as can happen quickly if abandoned..

they are so organized.... the city should allow them to organize and re-purpose abandoned building to address the homeless issue.. of course they need to get the agreement from the individual owners but that will be easier if its a state owned

Leaving the building unoccupied is in the end more profitable for big companies than renting them out or selling them, its a huge problem in nearly every bigger or growing city nowdays

In The Netherlands we call them 'Krakers'. In the 1982 the community was big in Amsterdam and in that year the bom was exploding and there was a big clash between the army and the krakers. In our history books it called the 'krakers rellen van 1982'. The reason that I bring this up is that the reasons then were the same as they are in Paris now. But I this also coming back here in the Netherlands because the real estate marked is completely locked and the price for a normal house is outrageous. Also renting is becoming expensive. Everywere the world is in crisis due to the pandemic and the economical crisis that is coming with it, again 2008 was the first one. I wish all the guy's in this video all the luck, a house is a right, not a privilege! ✊
