My Fake Picasso Went to Auction at $1.4 Million

Forgery is one of the greatest challenges the art world faces today, with fakes and misattributions estimated to be as high as 50% of all works in the market.

Before his arrest, Billy “The Brush” Mumford forged over 1000 pieces that made their way across the globe. His best friend David Henty had equally thrived selling his fakes on eBay, with one of his Picasso copies recently going up for auction at £1 million.

Sydney Lima meets the two convicted forgers as they work to create a knock-off piece of art that could be accepted as real. Then she takes the piece to a forensic lab to see whether they can tell it’s a fake.

I’m not the only one thinking that the whole art world & auction community is a massive hoax, a money laundering scheme and cliche investment for bored fake-deep wealthy people.

Let me save you all some time. There is going to be a lot of people down below in the comments section that are going to critique the art world but strangely enough they don't mind the corruption and scams that go on in the hip hop and rap industry. By the way most of these people that will complain about forgeries will be the first ones in line buying fake Nikes, Gucci and any other quote luxury reproduction they can get their hands on.

The double standard from that forgery expert, making money off of someone else's genius? Isn't that what the art world does anyway? The artists family or descendants don't see a penny unless they're the ones who own the painting originally. I'm with the forger. If you wanna buy a painting, get it analysed, especially if you're spending a lot of money on it.

interesting how that forgery "specialist" is so confident in her assessment when she is told the image is a forgery. I'd like to see her act the same way when she's presented with a "forgery" she's told nothing about.

I thought I found a Banksy in Edinburgh and even wrote to his website and they said it was a forgery. Then I went on eBay and saw that you can buy Banksy stencils and go out and paint Banksy rats everywhere. It never occurred to me that someone would paint fake Banksy graffiti just to fool people and not for any sort of profit.

It would be quite simple to solve the pigment problem, buy a bunch of cheap paintings from the correct period, scraping the most predominant colors off with a scalpel. After washing in cleaning spirits. Collect the pigments you have left after drying and re-dispers into flax seed oil

As an artist myself I feel so on fence about this.. On one hand I enjoy them taking the piss out of the artworld and all those pretentious rich assholes who buy expensive paintings just for who did them and not the actual work but at the same time; I also understand the frustation of being copied - even though the people they do copy are dead and gone. I can also see why art historians would get crossed but I also feel like people take art way too seriously.

Some forgeries here are stunning. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if it looks lovely; it IS lovely. A painting doesn't need a name or signature to be appreciated as real art. PS. If you need a machine to tell you there's a forgery; why should anyone care? Share the style around. Lovely!

John Blake
John Blake 11 päivää sitten
Where they really need to crack down is the auction houses doing the reselling. As the woman doing the testing pointed out, with just a loupe or a microscope you could tell that this was a modern fake (colors, no cracking, etc.) Auction houses know this but turn a blind eye to it. This also happens with Asian art, especially Chinese where obvious fakes are sold off with evasive descriptions; I.E. a vase might have a "Qianlong" mark but be an obvious 20th century copy and the auction description will read "Chinese vase with Qianlong mark" as opposed to "Modern copy of a Qianlong vase". This covers them in case of complaints as they never technically claimed that it was of the period. It's something that will end up destroying buyer confidence in the market and I really wish they'd stop. As for EBay, well. It is buyer beware. You're not going to find a Picasso for sale on EBay for 20$.

13:51 It would've been interesting to see what she would've answered to the forger's arguments : that some people do want a replica because they don't want a poster of it and there's nothing wrong with providing that, and that people selling the real artworks are also "profiting off someone else's genius", but without the work

To be fair, if someone else is making money selling the art of a dead guy, I don't see much wrong with recreating (as long as the buyer knows it's a recreation) a piece for a fan and selling it. If someone's going to buy the original, they will. The dude paints everyday, so it's not like he's not doing anything.

He clearly didnt put much effort into it as a forgerie. It IS possible to use traditional pigments fro italy, marocco etc. and make fresh oil paintings and rapidly age them to create all the cracks and patina you want. Basically the same tools and ovens for heat and dust testing as in the car industry
